Hokkaido: Ashoro River (mid-stretch)

The Ashoro River in Eastern Hokkaido has easy access and is easy fishing. Perfect for a summer afternoon with a light fly rod.

Native Japanese trout and small rainbow trout seem abundant.

Access and Fishing Notes

Directions: This mid stretch of the river is between Nakaashoro Shrine and Kamiashoro. From the South/West, take the E38, and E61 to Ashoro IC. Then follow the 242 North to Ashoro. In the centre of Ashoro, turn onto the 241. Nakaashoro Shrine is about 10km from the turn-off.
Access: Access to the river is possible at bridges or in some places where the road comes close to the river. Some possible access locations are shown on the map but conditions may change so be sure to park in a suitable spot that is not blocking any access, especially to farmers fields.
Conditions: Weather was fine, a few clouds and 26C. It had rained the day before and there was some colour in the water.
Technique: I used a 5-weight fly rod and floating, tapered line. Fished upstream with dry flies such as Greenwell's Glory, Parachute Adams, Royal Wulff.
Fish: Japanese native trout (Yamame) and small rainbow trout.
