Hokkaido: Nishibetsu River (upper-stretch)

The Nishibetsu River in North-eastern Hokkaido is a beautiful small river in its upper reaches.

You can find Iwana (white spotted char) and Yamame.

Access and Fishing Notes

Directions: This upper stretch of the river is from the Ponbetsu River junction up to the bridge near the Hokkaido Fisheries Research Institute. From the South/West, take the E38, and E61 to Ashoro IC. Then follow the 242 North to Ashoro. In the centre of Ashoro, turn onto the 241. Follow the 241 all the way through the Akan-Mashu National Park and on to Teshikaga. From Teshikaga, the 243 takes you to the river.
Access: Access to the river is possible at bridges or in some places where the road comes close to the river. Some possible access locations are shown on the map but conditions may change so be sure to park in a suitable spot that is not blocking any access, especially to farmers fields.

Also note that fishing upstream of the bridge near the Fisheries Research Institute is not allowed.

Conditions: Weather was fine with broken clouds. There was still mist on the river at 10.30 in the morning but it burned off as the temperature rose to 26C. The river was low and clear.
Technique: I used a 5-weight fly rod and floating, tapered line. Fished upstream with a mixture of brown-hackled dry flies.
Fish: Japanese native trout, Iwana and Yamame up to about 25cm.
