Hokkaido: Tobetsu River

The Tobetsu River in North-Eastern Hokkaido is a tributary of the Kushiro River, joining it at Teshikaga. Access was straightforward with a mixture of easily wade-able sections and some deeper pools. Suits a 4-6 weight outfit on this stretch.

No fish caught on this trip but large trout observed.

Access and Fishing Notes

Directions: This stretch of the river is on the outskirts of Teshikaga, a few kilometres before it joins the Kushiro River. From the centre of Teshikaga, take the 241 to the West. After about 5km, turn left and follow the road to the river bridge.
Access: Access to the river is possible at the bridge near the parking spot shown on the map.
Conditions: Weather was fine, a few clouds and 24C. Water was clear and there was plenty of insect life.
Technique: I used a 5-weight fly rod and floating, tapered line. Fished upstream with various dry flies from Greenwell's Glory to Mayfly patterns.
Fish: No fish caught on this trip but I saw a large fish that was possibly a rainbow trout.
