Hokkaido: Muka River

The Muka River in Central North Hokkaido is an easily accessible and wadeable river in the section upstream of Kitami-Yamato Post Office.

It's packed with small rainbow trout and yamame.

Access and Fishing Notes

Directions: This upper stretch of the river is about half way between the Kitami-Yamato Post Office and the Recycling centre. From Asahikawa to the West or Kitami to the East, just follow route 39 all the way to the river. The road closely follows the river between the post office and the recycling centre.
Access: Access to the river is possible at bridges and in a few places where there are gravel side tracks. Some possible access locations are shown on the map but conditions may change so be sure to park in a suitable spot that is not blocking any access, especially to farmers fields.
Conditions: Weather was fine with a full cover of high clouds but bright. It was a warm day with abundant insect life.
Technique: I used a 5-weight fly rod and floating, tapered line. Fished upstream with a Greenwell's Glory and beetle patterns.
Fish: Rainbow trout up to about 20cm and some smaller Japanese native trout (Yamame).
