Fly Fishing Japan - Tomoe River and Kamikoshi Gorge

On Japan's main island (Honshu) the Tomoe River and it's tributaries run just to the East of Nagoya and Toyota cities.

The system is stocked with amago, a type of Japanese trout.

Access and Fishing Notes

Directions: From Nagoya, head East and follow the 153 to Asuke. At Asuke, turn onto route 420 and then after about 200m turn onto the smaller local road that goes to the South of the river. This follows the river closer than the main road and has a few parking spots.
Access: Where there are clear parking spots near the river, there are obvious tracks to get down to the river.
Conditions: Weather was dry and warm enough for short sleeves, with high cloud cover.
Technique: I used a 5-weight fly rod and floating, tapered line. Fished upstream with weighted and unweighted pheasant tail nymphs and some generic brown hackle dry patterns.
Fish: Amago trout and 'Nipponocypris sieboldii' (a small native fish).
